Who Owns MAZDA?

Who makes Mazda? Let’s start at the beginning. What would become the Mazda Motor Corporation was initially founded in Hiroshima, Japan, in 1920 as Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd, which developed and produced compressed cork. This was changed to Toyo Kogyo Co., Ltd in 1927, once the company rebuilt after a devastating fire destroyed 70% of its facilities. The renamed company switched its focus to machine production and began the manufacture of three-wheeled motorcycles called “Autorickshaws.” These were the highlights of Mazda-sponsored events in the 1930s, causing the popularity of motorized carts to skyrocket, as well as bringing the Mazda name to light.

A prototype passenger vehicle was created in 1940, but at the time, Mazda was still primarily known for its three-wheeled carts. Due to the outbreak of the Second World War, however, this prototype never went into mass production. In fact, it wouldn’t be till 1960 that Mazda manufactured and marketed the Mazda R360, the company’s first successful passenger car.

Where Is MAZDA Made?

Now that you know who owns Mazda, you may be curious about where the Mazda3 or Mazda CX-90 models you see on streets are made. While the Mazda Motor Corporation is based in Fuchu, Aki District, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, Mazda models are likely manufactured at the Mazda plant in Huntsville, Alabama, where they are manufactured for the North American market. Mazda also has plants in the Japanese cities of Hiroshima, Miyoshi, and Hofu, as well as many scattered throughout the United States, Mexico, China, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand!
